Biographical Information

Alexandra graduated from Latrobe University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy. She went on to complete further postgraduate study, graduating with a Masters of Occupational Therapy in 2009. Her thesis and area of research was investigating the validity of functional assessments with individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.

Alexandra's postgraduate research project investigated the concurrent validity of the World Health Organisation's Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS II) with the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) with individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, receiving intensive psychosocial rehabilitation services.

Since joining the field of academia, Alexandra has developed an interest in first year transition to university and student learning engagement in preparing for oral assessments. She is currently conducting a project that aims to investigate the level of effort and time second year Occupational Therapy students contribute to preparing for their mental health unit oral assessment that is assessed by an individual with a lived experience of a mental health disorder.

Another area of developing interest is the experience of first year university students. Alexandra has worked with students in their first year of university study after transitioning from high school or after a period of absence from study for a number of years. She is committed to working collaboratively with students to improve their experiences and make the transition as successfully as possible.

As a new graduate, Alexandra worked as an Occupational Therapist in the North West of Melbourne in a variety of clinical psychosocial rehabilitation services. She later became the Senior Occupational Therapist and Project Coordinator at North West Area Mental Health Services in Victoria. In these roles she was responsible for the management and supervision of the Occupational Therapy workforce and multi-discipline reflective practice supervision of the community care unit staff.

As the Project Coordinator, she planned, developed and implemented several General Practice Clinics within several local high schools. The aim of these clinics was to provide young people with access to primary health care in a health promotion and preventative model of care.

Alexandra began teaching in 2008 at Latrobe University in the School of Occupational Therapy. She commenced teaching in the second year Clinical Psychiatry Unit. Further roles included unit coordinator and Problem Base Learning tutor for Occupational Therapy students and later a workshop facilitator for the common first year units. In 2013 she took up a position at ACU in the School of Allied and Public Health, Occupational Therapy Department teaching into first year foundation units and mental health units.
