Biographical Information
I grew up in the suburbs of Boston, having a proud public school education. It was at high school where I was first inspired to pursue history. My teachers were phenomenal, and I would not be here today if it were not for them. I completed my undergraduate degree at Georgetown University in December 2003, with a major in history, minor in Spanish, and a Certificate in Australia and New Zealand Studies. It was Georgetown's Center for Australia and New Zealand Studies that first piqued my interest in Australian and Pacific History, and I chose to pursue the interest at the postgraduate level. I moved to Melbourne in August 2004 to begin a PhD in Indigenous History at the University of Melbourne. Although my PhD was originally meant to examine a small group of Yolngu soldiers from the Second World War, the project grew into a comparative analysis of Yolngu, Papua New Guineans, and the Navajo Code Talkers. I completed my PhD in 2008 and shortly thereafter began lecturing at ACU.

During semester one 2020, I was a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Australian Studies at the University of Cologne (cut short by Covid-19).

During semester two 2014, I was a Visiting Fellow at the Australian Studies Centre (Centro de Estudios Australianos) at the Universitat de Barcelona.

PhD, University of Melbourne (2009)
Graduate Certificate in Higher Education, ACU (2011)
BA, Georgetown University (2003)

Research

My research historicises the experiences of marginalised social groups in Australia in the twentieth century. I have conducted several research projects examining the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in the Australian armed forces, particularly in the Second World War and post-Second World War eras. Through these projects I have researched topics including the role of women, racism and commemorations of Indigenous service. I have also conducted transnational research, looking at Native American military service as a point of comparison with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experiences.

I also recently completed a project examining the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex service personnel in the Australian armed forces post-Second World War. This project, entitled 'Serving in Silence? LGBTI Military Service in Australia since 1945', was in partnership with the Australian Queer Archives (formerly Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives) and Defence LGBTI Information Service (DEFGLIS). I am still doing work with LGBTI veterans - especially the Defence LGBTI Veterans Association (DLVA) - to seek justice for past persecution of LGBTI service members.

Since 2017, I have been researching the history of transgender Australians since the early twentieth century. The project focuses especially on the personal experiences of gender diverse people and intentionally centres their stories and perspectives in the contemporary era, while looking to media, the law and medicine for trans histories before living memory. This project is working closely with Australia's trans and gender diverse community.

Finally, I have recently commenced a project on the history of sex and sexuality in the Australian military.

Research project 1: "Transgender Australians: The History of an Identity"

This project aims to trace the emergence of transgender identities in Australia since the early twentieth century. Using oral histories, archives and media, the project intends to analyse the shifting medical, legal, cultural and popular discourses about transgender people, as well as study how evolving societal attitudes have affected the lives of gender diverse people. By revealing transgender people's histories, the project will explore the ways gender diverse Australians have expressed their identities amidst changing social norms. The expected outcomes will inform current debates about transgender rights, healthcare provision and social inclusion.

Research project 2: "A Century of Sex and the Australian Military, 1914-2020"

This project aims to explore how the Australian military and its members have dealt with sex and sexuality. Through uncovering policy, health and disciplinary files, as well as medical literature, civilian police, newspaper and court records, the project intends to analyse how the Australian military evolved its approach to members&rsquo sexual and intimate relations, and the consequences military life had for individuals&rsquo sexual and romantic partnerships. By illuminating the relationships between the Australian military, sexual cultures, the law, health and public policy, the findings should benefit the Australian Defence Force&rsquos ongoing process of culture change and inform policy formulation around veterans&rsquo health and welfare.
